A data breach at 700Credit, a company providing credit checks and identity verification for auto dealerships across the United States, has compromised the sensitive information of at least 5.6 million people. The stolen data includes names, addresses, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers.
The Michigan-based company stated the breach occurred in October and was carried out by an unidentified bad actor. According to Michigan’s attorney general, the hacker stole personal data that had been collected from dealerships between May and October of 2025.
The company is now sending letters by mail to the individuals whose information was stolen. These letters offer credit monitoring services.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel urged affected consumers to take action. She advised, “If you get a letter from 700Credit, don’t ignore it. It is important that anyone affected by this data breach takes steps as soon as possible to protect their information. A credit freeze or monitoring services can go a long way in preventing fraud, and I encourage Michiganders to use the tools available to keep their identity safe.”
