British cryptographer Adam Back denies NYT report that he is Bitcoin creatorSatoshi Nakamoto

The identity of Bitcoin’s creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, remains a mystery. A new New York Times investigation suggests it could be Adam Back, a British cryptographer. Back denies he is Satoshi.

Back is a logical suspect. He created Hashcash, the proof-of-work system Satoshi used, and is now a blockchain CEO. He agrees Satoshi is likely a fifty-something British Cypherpunk like himself.

Journalist John Carreyrou used AI to analyze old cryptography forum emails. It found Back’s writing style was the closest match to Satoshi’s, noting shared quirks like missing hyphens. Back calls this coincidence among people with similar interests.

While clever, the AI evidence isn’t conclusive. The case for Satoshi’s identity stays open.
