Jeff Bezos’ space company Blue Origin has announced a new satellite internet network called TeraWave. Designed for enterprise, data center, and government customers, the network promises data speeds of up to 6 terabits per second.
The TeraWave constellation will consist of 5,280 satellites in low-Earth orbit and 128 in medium-Earth orbit. Blue Origin aims to deploy the first satellites by late 2027, though the timeline for completing the full network is not yet clear.
The low-Earth orbit satellites will use RF connectivity with a maximum speed of 144 gigabits per second. The medium-Earth orbit satellites will use optical links capable of reaching the full 6 terabits per second. For comparison, SpaceX’s current Starlink service offers a maximum of 400 megabits per second, with plans for future upgrades to 1 gigabit.
According to its website, TeraWave is intended to add a space-based layer to existing network infrastructure, providing connectivity to locations unreachable by traditional methods. Blue Origin stated that the network addresses an unmet need for enterprise-grade internet with higher speeds, symmetrical upload and download, greater redundancy, and rapid scalability.
This announcement follows the recent rebranding of Amazon’s own consumer-focused satellite network, called Leo, which will consist of about 3,000 low-Earth orbit satellites offering traditional broadband speeds. Together, these two networks could provide more robust competition to SpaceX’s Starlink, which currently serves over 9 million customers across consumer, commercial, and government sectors. The companies emphasize that the Amazon and Blue Origin networks are distinct projects.
Blue Origin is expanding its role as a commercial space company. Known for its New Shepard suborbital rocket, the company successfully launched its larger New Glenn rocket for the first time in 2025 and has since repeated the launch and landed the booster. It has also launched a commercial payload for NASA and plans a robotic Moon landing mission this year. With TeraWave, Blue Origin adds satellite manufacturing and operation to its growing portfolio of services.
