Snap is moving forward with plans to release the latest version of its AR glasses, called Specs, later this year. This hardware product is a strategic priority for the company. However, Snap recently lost one of the top executives connected to the project. Scott Myers, the Senior Vice President of Specs, reportedly left following a dispute with Snap CEO Evan Spiegel.
The tech blog Sources originally reported that Myers departed over a supposed blow-up with Spiegel. When contacted by TechCrunch, a Snap spokesperson stated that Myers had decided to step down from his role. The spokesperson thanked him for his contributions and wished him well, while disputing the characterization of a blow-up but offering no further details on the departure.
The spokesperson also emphasized the company’s focus, saying they cannot wait to bring Specs to the world later this year and remain committed to disciplined execution and long-term value creation.
The exact timing of Myers’ departure and the nature of the alleged disagreement remain unclear. When asked about the dispute on social media, Sources author Alex Heath indicated it was about strategy but could not elaborate further.
Snap has been hinting at the commercial release of Specs for some time and has recently taken steps signaling a serious launch push. In January, the company spun the Specs team into its own standalone subsidiary, Specs Inc., stating this would allow for greater operational focus and alignment.
Scott Myers joined Snap in 2020. His previous career included roles at SpaceX, Apple, and Nokia. In an interview last summer, Myers described the development process for Specs as an entirely new paradigm. He also discussed the challenges of perfecting the design, joking that he did not want to see people wearing a wire coming out of the back of their head.
