European consumers are responding to recent political tensions by taking action. Following threats from the U.S. to take control of Greenland, a Danish territory, a grassroots movement to boycott American products has gained momentum. This has led to a significant surge in popularity for two mobile applications in Denmark.
These apps, which help users identify American-made products and suggest local alternatives, have recently climbed to the top of the Danish App Store. The Danish App Store serves users in both Denmark and Greenland, and a similar trend is observed on Google Play.
The boycott extends beyond shopping. Danish consumers are also canceling U.S. vacations and subscriptions to American streaming services like Netflix. This shift in consumer behavior is directly reflected in the app market.
According to new data, two apps named NonUSA and Made O’Meter have entered the top ten rankings this month. NonUSA specifically jumped to become the number one app. It allows users to scan product barcodes with their iPhone to see a product’s country of origin and then presents Danish alternatives.
The top markets for NonUSA currently are Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Iceland, indicating a broader Nordic response. Made O’Meter, available on both iOS and Android, has also risen to become the number five app on the App Store.
Combined, the average daily downloads for these apps have increased by 867 percent over the past week compared to the week before. It is important to note that the Danish App Store is a smaller market. It can take only a few thousand downloads in a day for an app to reach the top position, with total daily downloads across all apps around 200,000.
Other apps currently in the Danish top ten include a local travel app, likely helpful for those changing vacation plans, alongside other local services. Some U.S.-based apps, including Shop, ChatGPT, and Microsoft Authenticator, also remain in the top chart.
