Apple’s new Studio displays come with Thunderbolt 5

Apple announced new MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models on Tuesday, both powered by its latest M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. The company also introduced a new family of displays, including a Studio Display and a Studio Display XDR.

The new 27-inch Studio Display is priced at $1,599, while the higher-end Studio Display XDR costs $3,299. Both displays feature improved cameras and connectivity. They come equipped with a 12MP Center Stage camera for better image quality and support a Desk View feature, which simultaneously shows your face and an overhead view of your desk.

The Studio Display features a 5K Retina display with over 14 million pixels, 600 nits of brightness, and support for the P3 wide color gamut. The displays include Thunderbolt 5 ports for connecting accessories and daisy-chaining up to four displays, with a Thunderbolt 5 Pro cable included. They also have a three-microphone array and a six-speaker sound system with Spatial Audio, which Apple says offers 30% deeper bass than the previous generation.

The Studio Display XDR features a 5K Retina XDR display with a mini-LED backlight and more than 2,000 local dimming zones. It reaches up to 1000 nits of SDR brightness and 2000 nits of peak HDR brightness, with a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. This model supports the Adobe RGB color standard. It has a 120Hz refresh rate, supports Adaptive Sync, and includes DICOM medical imaging presets along with a Medical Imaging Calibrator for use in medical settings. Apple notes the Medical Imaging Calibrator on macOS is pending FDA clearance and is expected to be available soon in the U.S.

While the Studio Display has a tilt-adjustable stand, the Display XDR also allows for height adjustment. Both displays are available with either standard or nano-texture glass options.

Pre-orders for the new displays begin on March 4, with availability starting on March 11.
