Apple tells Patreon to move creators to in-app purchase for subscriptions byNovember

Patreon is challenging a new mandate from Apple that requires all creators on its platform to adopt a subscription billing model. Apple has set a new transition deadline of November 1, 2026 for this change.

While the shift will only affect the four percent of creators still using Patreon’s legacy billing systems, the company argues that Apple’s inconsistent terms make it difficult for creators to build stable, long-term businesses.

This conflict stems from a 2024 Apple mandate. At that time, Apple stated Patreon must move all creators to subscription billing using Apple’s in-app purchase system by November 2025, or risk removal from the App Store. Apple made this decision because Patreon was handling billing for some subscriptions directly, which Apple viewed as bypassing its commission structure.

Apple initially provided a lengthy transition period. Patreon planned to switch creators in November 2024, allowing them to raise subscription prices to cover Apple’s fees. Creators could also delay the change until November 2025 if needed, though they would be unable to offer subscriptions in the app until they complied.

The situation changed in May 2025. Following loosened App Store guidelines from the U.S. court ruling in Epic versus Apple, Patreon began allowing creators to process web payments via links in its app. Patreon informed creators then that the earlier November 2025 deadline was no longer active, granting them more time to plan.

Patreon now says its decision to pause the transition may have contributed to confusion, as Apple has now reinstated a deadline of November 2026.

Although Patreon is complying, it strongly disagrees with Apple’s decision. The company states that creators require consistency and clarity, and that those on legacy billing now face their third major policy reversal from Apple in eighteen months. Patreon adds that it has repeatedly proposed tools to Apple to help creators transition on their own schedules, but Apple has continually declined those proposals.

Patreon has created several tools to assist with the changes. These include a benefit eligibility tool to track member payments, tier repricing tools, and gifting and discount tools for payment flexibility. An option for annual-only memberships will also be introduced before the November 2026 deadline.
