Apple reportedly plans ambitious satellite-powered iPhone features

Apple is planning to expand the satellite capabilities of the iPhone beyond the current features of texting, calling emergency services, and contacting roadside assistance. According to reports, several new satellite-powered features are currently in development.

These potential upgrades include a new API that would allow third-party app makers to integrate satellite connections into their own applications. Another feature in the works is a version of Apple Maps that would provide navigation without needing a cellular or WiFi connection. The company is also working on the ability to send photos via satellite messaging.

To improve the user experience, Apple is focusing on increased support for natural usage. This would allow a phone to connect to a satellite even when it is not pointed directly at the sky. All of these features are designed to make the iPhone more functional for users who are outside the range of traditional cellular networks.

A separate potential upgrade could enhance 5G networks by allowing them to connect to satellites for increased coverage. It is reported that the basic satellite features will remain free, while customers would pay their carriers for more advanced support. To enable these new capabilities, Apple’s satellite partner Globalstar needs to improve its infrastructure, and Apple is reportedly helping to finance these upgrades.
