According to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s long-awaited Siri revamp could transform the smart assistant into a chatbot more similar to ChatGPT. His sources indicate that this Siri chatbot, which would be integrated into iOS 27, could be the central focus of Apple’s WWDC presentation in June.
Internally codenamed “Campos,” the Siri chatbot will accept both voice and text inputs. This represents a shift in direction, as Apple senior vice president Craig Federighi had previously stated he did not want Siri to be a chatbot. He had expressed a preference for Apple’s AI options to be seamlessly integrated and available whenever needed. The change in strategy appears to be a response to increased competitive pressure from the success of other companies’ AI chatbots.
Apple may also perceive a potential threat from OpenAI’s reported plans to enter the hardware space, a project reportedly led by former Apple design head Jony Ive.
It is widely acknowledged that Apple has been trailing behind in the AI race. The company delayed the rollout of a “more personalized Siri” multiple times and spent the previous year evaluating potential AI partners. Apple tested the technology of competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic for a potential deal before ultimately selecting Google’s Gemini as its AI partner, a partnership both tech giants confirmed earlier this month.
