Anthropic reportedly nears $170B valuation with potential $5B round

Anthropic is close to securing a funding round of $3 billion to $5 billion, which would value the large language model developer at $170 billion. Iconiq Capital is leading this round, though a second lead investor may join. The company has also held discussions with Qatar Investment Authority and Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund, GIC.

If completed, this deal would nearly triple Anthropic’s valuation from its previous $61.5 billion mark, set after a $3.5 billion funding round in March led by Lightspeed Venture Partners. Other investors in that round included Bessemer Venture Partners, Cisco Investments, D1 Capital Partners, Fidelity Management & Research Company, General Catalyst, Jane Street, Menlo Ventures, and Salesforce Ventures.

Despite its focus on AI safety, Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei, expressed reservations in a leaked memo about accepting funding from sovereign wealth funds tied to authoritarian governments. He acknowledged the challenge of balancing ethical principles with the financial demands of AI development, stating that refusing all controversial funding sources is impractical for running a business.

Anthropic has not yet commented on the latest funding reports.
