A new wave of AI-powered browsers is emerging from companies like OpenAI and Perplexity, attempting to carve out a space in a market long dominated by Chrome. In response, Google has announced it is speeding up the pace of Chrome releases. Starting this September, Chrome will move from a four-week release schedule to a two-week schedule.
Google has committed to shipping a new milestone with each release, focusing on areas like stability, speed, or ease of use. This is in addition to the weekly security updates introduced in 2023. As a result, these improvements will now arrive twice as frequently.
Officially, Google states the new schedule reflects the ever-changing web platform and ensures developers have immediate access to the latest tools. However, this move comes as Chrome faces potential competition from AI model providers who are rebuilding the browser for an agentic web, where more user tasks are automated.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT Atlas offers a built-in AI assistant and is experimenting with various automations. Perplexity’s Comet includes a sidecar AI assistant for all users, plus tools like an email assistant and meeting scheduler for paid customers. In response to these emerging rivals, Google has been rapidly integrating its Gemini AI deeper into Chrome, including features for autonomous tasks.
Google told TechCrunch this latest schedule change isn’t AI-related, but it is hard to ignore the competitive pressure to innovate faster. The new two-week cycle starts with the beta and stable versions of Chrome on September 8, 2026, and will apply to all platforms including desktop, Android, and iOS. No changes are being made to other early release channels like Dev and Canary.
The Extended Stable release, designed for enterprise administrators and Chromium embedders who need more time to manage updates, will continue on an eight-week cycle. This option will also remain available for Chromebook users.
