Amazon launches a low-price standalone shopping app, Amazon Bazaar, in over adozen markets

On Friday, Amazon announced the debut of Amazon Bazaar, a new low-cost shopping destination for Asia, Africa, and Latin America. This new marketplace will be available as a separate app from the main Amazon shopping application. According to the retailer, most products on Bazaar will be available for under ten dollars, with some items priced as low as two dollars.

The product selection is available now on Android and iOS devices. The dedicated app is currently accessible in several markets, including Hong Kong, the Philippines, Taiwan, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Peru, Ecuador, Argentina, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Nigeria. Amazon has stated that more markets will gain access to the app in the coming months.

This new app has significant overlap with Amazon Haul, a discount store that launched last November to compete with Shein and Temu. Haul will continue to operate within Amazon’s main website and app in its existing markets, which include the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Japan, and Australia.

In other markets, Amazon had already branded the Amazon Haul concept as Bazaar, where it has been available through the main Amazon shopping app. That version will also remain available in Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. The use of two different names for the same low-cost inventory may seem confusing, but Amazon believes the different names better resonate with local language preferences and cultures.

The creation of a standalone shopping app for its cheaper inventory signals that Amazon is ramping up its competition with low-cost Chinese shopping apps like Temu, Shein, and TikTok Shop. These platforms have seen broad adoption from younger users and others with less disposable income to spend on items like clothing, home decor, electronics, and other household goods.

The Bazaar app will offer users hundreds of thousands of affordable products in categories such as fashion, home goods, and lifestyle products. Product pages will feature familiar Amazon elements like customer reviews and star ratings. Customers can use their existing Amazon credentials to shop and check out, with payment options including Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.

Orders must meet a local minimum purchase amount to qualify for free shipping, which varies by market. For smaller orders, a standard delivery fee will be charged. Shipments are expected to arrive in around two weeks or less. Returns are free within fifteen days of receipt, and Amazon offers multilingual customer support. The app itself supports six languages: English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, German, and Traditional Chinese.

To engage customers, the app will include interactive features like social lucky draws and promotions, which have been popularized by other shopping apps. As an additional incentive, new customers will receive fifty percent off their first delivery.
