Amazon hits sellers with ‘fuel surcharge’ as Iran war roils global energymarkets

The war in Iran has disrupted global oil markets, causing U.S. gas prices to spike. In response, Amazon is imposing a new 3.5% fuel surcharge on sellers using its Fulfillment by Amazon service, starting April 17. This will impact countless merchants who rely on Amazon’s distribution network. A company spokesperson stated elevated fuel and logistics costs necessitated the temporary surcharge, which they claim is lower than those of other major carriers. Amazon last used a similar surcharge in 2022 when oil prices were also high. The current conflict, involving the strategic Strait of Hormuz where 20% of the world’s oil passes, has significantly driven up global energy prices.
