Adobe adds new AI-powered image editing features to Photoshop

Adobe is introducing new AI-powered image editing and enhancement features to Photoshop using its Firefly models. The company announced the rollout of an image upscaling feature, an object blending tool, and an improved object remover.

The Generative Upscale feature enhances images up to 8 megapixels, making it ideal for restoring details in old photos, upscaling images for prints, or adapting assets for different platforms.

Adobe previously previewed a feature called Project Perfect Blend, which adjusts colors, shadows, and lighting for newly added objects to make them blend seamlessly into a scene. Now officially named Harmonize, this tool allows users to place an object in a scene, remove its background, and let Photoshop automatically adjust visual elements like color, lighting, and shadows to match the environment.

The company has also upgraded its object removal tool. Earlier versions sometimes introduced unwanted artifacts when filling gaps left by removed objects. The improved algorithm now focuses solely on removing the object and reconstructing the background more accurately.

In a demo, Adobe’s director for product management at Photoshop, Joel Baer, tested the tool by removing a small bowl of Pico de Gallo from an image. While the older version replaced the object with a green blob, the new version successfully removed it and restored the background seamlessly.

Additional small updates include better asset management for shared workspaces and the ability to select different versions of the Firefly model when using AI features.

Shambhavi Kadam, senior director of product management for Photoshop, explained that these features were developed after consulting photographers, designers, and content creators to address workflow pain points. The goal is to save time, reduce friction, and automate tedious tasks.

The Generative Upscale, Harmonize, and improved object removal features are currently available in beta for Photoshop on desktop and web. The Harmonize feature is also accessible on the new Photoshop iOS app through an early access program.
